March 28, 2008 to March 30, 2008
Eric will be the Author Guest of Honor at MidSouthCon in Memphis, TN.
Also scheduled to appear are the Science Guest of Honor, Ben Bova, and
the Artist Guest of Honor, Bob Eggleton. Bob has done a number of cover
illustrations for Eric’s novels, including /Rats, Bats & Vats, The
Course of Empire, Pyramid Scheme, /and the anthology Eric edited with
Mike Resnick that’s coming out in March, /The Dragon Done It.
While Eric's still in the South Pacific, we'll point out that his latest column in the just-relased first issue of Jim Baen's Universe second year is about the relationship between drm-free ebooks and the opacity of the book market.
It starts:
In my last essay, I approached the question of so-called online piracy from what I called a "negative" standpoint—by which I meant that I was content with knocking down the arguments advanced in favor of DRM. In this essay, I want to turn the problem around and approach it from a positive standpoint, by examining the many ways in which a non-DRM approach to electronic publishing can help the situation of authors and publishers."
Read the rest of it (and the new issue of Universe) here. http://baens-universe.com/articles/salvos7
(The article is free, the rest of the magazine requires subscription to read more than the first half. You know the principle, "Hey Kid! Come'ere! Try this! The first-half's free!)

If you're a subscriber to Jim Baen's Universe, and you haven't been there in a while, you'll want to go check it out.
There have been major updates to the site, and most notably to the e-arc experience (no no longer requiring a separate login) and to the member-self-management system.
You really owe it to yourself to go check it out. http://baens-universe.com
If you're NOT a subscriber, why not? Go visit Universe and see what's what! The first half of every story is free, and the entirty of Mike Resnick's Hugo Award Nominated story is free! Go for it!
In other news, Eric and Lou leave today for their tour of New Zealand, Australia and Hawaii. Anyone who is in the area who isn't planning on being at the con in New Zealand is really missing out! The boss won't be back for several weeks. We've been told to try to stay out of trouble till then.

Hi, all
I just thought I'd let everybody know that Baen Books will be picking up the American alternate history series I started at Del Rey, with 1812: THE RIVERS OF WAR and 1824: THE ARKANSAS WAR. I just signed a contract for two new books in the series.
Eric
Loyal minion note: We don't yet know anything about the status of the first two novels except that 1824: The Arkansas War is scheduled for paperback release by Del Rey. The possibility of webscriptions availablity of TAW is open to discussion but unknown. More when we hear it.

While it will not be final until mid June, and not available on webscriptions until July, Grantville Gazette number 12 is now "up on the front page" at http://www.grantvillegazette.com with a really cool cover image.
12 will eventually feature the start of a continuing serial story by Eric Flint, but we don't have that yet.
Stil, there's a lot of cool stories and non-fiction. Very tasty.

From Eric Flint:
I’m sending this letter to everyone who has at one time or another bought an issue of the Grantville Gazette, the electronic magazine devoted to the 1632 series, or purchased one of the various multi-issue packages we offer. Many of you are regular readers of the magazine.
The purpose of this letter is to tell you that we are making a number of major and exciting changes to the magazine, beginning with the next issue. That’s Volume 11, which will be coming out on May 1st.
The Grantville Gazette, which Jim Baen and I began as an experiment, has proven to be a very successful venture in electronic publishing. Successful enough, in fact, that beginning with Volume 11 we will doing the following:

As one of the loyal minions, it occurs to me that some of you may not be aware that Eric's semi-monthly editors column at Jim Baen's Universe is free and open to read without a subscription.
Therefore, I think it might be appropriate to post links to those essays here, since Eric "blogs" on Baen's Bar and in his Universe editorial column rather than on his web site, leaving most of the content here to his crew of minions. There are two sets of columns "Salvos Against Big Brother" - which is Eric's take on the long-running copyright and drm debate, and "The Editor's Page."
I'm including links to both below.
