Charlie C, visit http://bar.baen.com/ and the 1632 Tech conference.

That's the place to start discussing your idea. [Smile]

Thinking about writing a story about the first professional fire brigade to be founded in Stockholm, and its attempts to get patronage. Thoughts?

Rick, first she'd likely think of "Hatfields & McCoys" as a *family* feud not a *clan* feud.

Second, she'd know what a "clan" is but not how it would relate to Politics especially Russian Politics which is how I took her question.

American politics doesn't usually involve the importance of which family/clan a person belongs to or is allied to.

Not sure I believe in the existence of a girl form West Virginia who doesn't know what a clan is... The Hatfields and McCoys are FAMOUS, and should have surviving kin in the area.

@1 Vernon Nemitz: A social class that I'd say holds the dubious honor of being less useful and deserving of praise than the nobility. And atleast here in Sweden the political class have all but become a new nobility (something that seems to hold true for the rest of the EU aswell), with generous pensions and sinecures in the business sector after their time in the Riksdag is done. It all just goes to show that we will always have some form of class society, but what really matters is what form that class society takes. And ensuring that it does not become rigid.

Again, another reason why Russia remained a second rate country OTL. The deliberate rejection of merit based promotion crushes innovations. Looking forward to seeing the whole book, which I hope brings Russia up to the same time line as the rest of the series.
