@9 I must have been too vague in my comment. I simply meant that if I had a new book from one of my favourite authors I wouldn’t be available for anything else until I’d read it to death. Of course he can comment but I simply expected him to be otherwise engaged.

@7 Daryl, Richard has pretty much stopped commenting on BHD snippets, but he apparently has not got an ARC of Torch, so he can comment away with everyone else.

As he says, the Joe Buckley site has both Chapters 1 and 9 posted, which are the 2 snippets from here and the stuff Flint posted on Baen’s Bar a while ago. Lotta stuff going on out there in the Honorverse…

@5 I agree with you, Mike. Weber wrote these two snippets. Flint is better at character than Weber, and much better at real (rather than corny) dialog. Both do good stories, but Weber’s plots can get awfully complicated and require very long books sometimes-the collaboration with Linda Evans, for example. A 1000 page paperback is not readable. For character I prefer Bujold. I find the Weber-Flint collaborations to have great texture, though. Beefy!

Summercat, when I look for “actual character insight/development” Flint and especially Weber are among the last authors to come to mind. It’s not Weber’s skill at all, and this chapter definitely reads as if Weber wrote it. So far this has been nothing but scene-setting recap, rather clumsily done IMO.

But I know, I know; it’s just the start of the book. That’s why I said, “Wake me up when the story starts,” because I do trust that eventually the story will start.

Im also enjoing this. It is nice to get some details about other star nations. Chapter 9 is at thefifthimperium.com. It gives some details about Beowulf’s Biological Survey Corps which is realy Beowulf’s special forces. I am looking forward to more of this, but will have to make do with BY HERESIES DISTRESSED. I saw it at Borders this afternoon and got a copy.

I’m enjoying this. Governer Barregos had seemed like an interesting character just from the fact he let certain things happen. Now we get to see him as the focus of the narrator’s camera, and it’s what we suspected.

Mike, what story would you prefer? Just go in guns blazing, or actual character insight/development?

Hey we’re finally getting to meet Governer Barregos, it’s all good. Hopefully we’ll find out some more about Maya Sector and get to see just how things are in the SL and on the fringe. If things are going to turn into open war with the Sollies, I for one would like to know a bit more about them than we do so far.
Oh, btw shouldn’t that be Winton not Winston in the 2nd paragraph?
