I'm glad we start getting snippets for this book, yet a bit disappointed that it start right after CoS. That probably means we won't learn much about what happens after the Battle of Manticore, or Oyster Bay, until somewhere in Mission of Honor come out in 2010...

@12 The fleet(s) need trained manpower. As has been said in previous books, it's been a long time since they signed up Spacemen without specialties.

That manpower though can be turned into Infantry rather quickly, and occupation forces always seem in short supply.

@11 The snippet above and of the real chapter 9 that EF posted on the Bar suggests that many of the outer worlds are too destitute to have anything to contribute to Manticore's war vs. the League and Mesa. Except maybe untrained manpower for the fleet.

The Mesan fleet was attacking Manticore-B at the end of Storm From the Shadows, while a League Navy task force was heading for Talbot system's capitol to revenge the destruction of an FS task force by Admiral Henke. So we know that the Star Kingdom is in deep kaka. One hopes the treecats are not harmed (or the inhabitants of Sphinx).

Th three places at which snippets usually appear are here, the Bar, and Jiltanith. Sometimes different novels appear in different places. I was proposing that the events here warn of a future novel, the four novels that are one.

At a complete guess based on absolutely no evidence the novel involves a large fleet showing up and attacking Manticore while Admiral Harrington is someplace else. The attacking fleet goes to its end thanks to the devious sneakiness and treachery of Lord White Haven in Honor's absence, hence the rumored working title Lack of Honor.

My point on the Verge is that there is this totally huge number of people who completely hate the League and might be persuaded to joining a holy crusade to defend themselves by doing unto the OFS, first.

My Safehold book reached B&N this afternoon. It was, of course, excellent.

GP, the Beowulf snippet on the bar was chapter 9 not chapter 1.

But you mentioned three places and three different snippets... where is the third place?

@6 George, what does "host of occupation" mean? Do you mean the Mayans and maybe other fed up folks under Frontier Security will be on the side of Manticore--or what is left of it after the Mesan strike?

Does "Storm From the Shadows" mysterious doings imply way more than war with Mesa, disintegration of the Terra League, and maybe (hope not, but) Mesa's attack on Manticore doing great harm to the inhabitants of the worlds of Manticore-B (and I suppose the other "prong" of the Mesan attack is on Torch)? Will Roszak's forces really align with Manticore? Is all this going to get way more complicated than my brain can handle? Will it take 3, 4 or 5 collaborators to keep all the threads that DW has pulled, in place? Oy!

"Their hatred for the Office of Frontier Security — and, by extension, the rest of the League — was both bitter and intensive."

Now we know where Manticore is getting its host of occupation for the League.
