Mike - I agree that re-doing the outer clothes could be an excercise in futility, however, you could re-do the underclothes. Of course there's always the problem of how much bodice the dress styles show.

Switching clothes without the subject's knowlege might work OK for someone who always wears the same clothes all the time (like a military uniform, or a cleric's robes). It's a bad idea for someone who may have many different sets of clothes for many different social occasions. It's especially bad for someone who is likely to be gifted sets of clothes and then may be expected to wear them.

If you actually want her to stay protected as much as possible, you need her cooperation.

Sharleyan might, however, have been persuaded that the gift of a layer of "steelthistle" (iirc) undergarment, besides being cool in the local weather (assuming it is much like silk), is moderately resistant to various unpleasantness, even as real silk garments were effectively worn for that purpose in this period, by the few who could afford them.

Also, the steelthistle was an advertisement implicit for local industry, and a token of appreciation. Of course, she got the very special steelthistle.

As I recall, Sharleyan brought one of her bigger political troublemakers with her to Charis in order to keep him from causing trouble. With any luck, the small fries left here will be suitably shocked by the bold approach Cayleb has planned for them.

Based on what I've read of 'olden days', Women of high rank had a LOT of clothes, a separate outfit based on time of day and social event they were attending. And to wear the exact same dress to different formal occasions when husband hunting was to state that your finances were in trouble and hurt your ability to make a match.
