If you want to know what happens in the rest of the book, go to webscriptions and buy the oopsie. It's the pre-arc that was released accidentally before it was ready. I can't imagine there'll be many major changes in the plot from that which can be found there. It has been interesting reading these snippets. I think I'll stop now. Don't see any point anymore.

About the "padding" - I think that this is just explaining the backstory for new readers of Weber's.

@Robert K

IIRC, Gervais Detweiler is one of Albrecht Detweiler's six "sons", actually clones. They're named alphabetically. Given the comment at the end of chapter 8 about the name I'm pretty sure there's an interesting back-story tidbit about someone named Gervais who played a part back when the original Detweiler and the Beowolf establishment decided they'd seen enough of each other.

Anyway, DW is sure underlining the issue. Given the buildup I'd suspect that the knives are out.

Like I mentioned several snippets ago, I'm very suspicious of Gervais Archer. Gervais is an unusual name, and came up in the discussion among the "shadows" (without use of a last name). And now he's carrying what's supposed to be a PDA (in a case) into a highly classified briefing? With no treecats around? OK...

Maybe I'm being too paranoid (and it is rather early in the book for something really strange to happen), but I'm looking forward to the next few snippets...of course, he might be exactly who he appears to be, or he could be spying, and if that's the case we won't find out until (at least) the whole thing comes out.

Half this book, so far, has seemed like padding to make the story seem longer. Raising Hamish is probably not even relevant, for example. All of it seems to be a prelude for Admiral Hemphill informing Mike that one of her staff was actually one of Hemphill's staff, on loan, to keep an eye on a new toy.

Been there, done that.

FIRST SENTENCE FIFTH PARAGRAPH

            The internecine warfare between the supporters of the two schools had been . . . vigorous. It had also, upon occasion, been highly personnel, and possibly just a little less than professionally correct.

Change "personnel" to read "personal".

Half of this snippet, seems to just be padding to make the story longer. Six paragraphs explaining the "War" between White Haven and Hemphill is just a bit much, and doesn't seem to have anything to do with the plot.

Anyone reading this book first, is going to be so confused, that that will just confuse them, and for the rest we already know about it. It's been going on since the beginning.

I really hope that the rest of the book isn't a rehash of what we already know.
