1634: THE BALTIC WAR — snippet 89

The novel should be starting to appear in the bookstores now, so this will be my last snippet.  It’s a nice long one, and I think it makes a good send-off.

Chapter 35

The Elbe, near Dömitz

“You can’t do this! You’re destroying my property! It’s illegal!”

Admiral John Simpson stood on the foredeck of the SSIM Constitution, back to the closed port stoppers of the wing ten-inch guns, and glanced at his wristwatch while Freiherr von Bleckede frothed.

PYRAMID POWER – snippet 16:

Liz had to admit that the goats made good going across the snow, despite her impatience. At least they did not encounter any more giants. Instead they came to a vast causeway of light that led to the gates of Asgard, and the end of the snow. The goats just kept right on going, cloven hooves clattering across the solid rainbow, to the giant-built walls of Asgard.

Chapter 3

Femella minima

Vienna, Austria

Maria Anna stood patiently as Frau Stecher adjusted a pair of sleeves. Since sleeve adjustment involved the ability to move one’s arms, she occasionally got to change position. Sometimes, she was even allowed to tickle the bare toes of her nephew Ferdinand, who was precociously propped up in a little padded chair, carefully watched by both his noble Aja and a more common nursemaid to make sure that the heir of Austria didn’t topple over and harm himself.

From Eric Flint:

I’m sending this letter to everyone who has at one time or another bought an issue of the Grantville Gazette, the electronic magazine devoted to the 1632 series, or purchased one of the various multi-issue packages we offer. Many of you are regular readers of the magazine.

Eric Flint on DRM and Copyright

Filed under: Information, Editing, Eric's enterprises, SF Sites — webmaster @ 3:04 pm

No DRMAs one of the loyal minions, it occurs to me that some of you may not be aware that Eric's semi-monthly editors column at Jim Baen's Universe is free and open to read without a subscription.

Therefore, I think it might be appropriate to post links to those essays here, since Eric "blogs" on Baen's Bar and in his Universe editorial column rather than on his web site, leaving most of the content here to his crew of minions.  There are two sets of columns "Salvos Against Big Brother" - which is Eric's take on the long-running copyright and drm debate, and "The Editor's Page."

I'm including links to both below.

1634: THE BAVARIAN CRISIS – snippet 5:

Privately, Rubens understood perfectly well that he had to find a bride for Don Fernando who would be sufficiently attractive for the prince to spend enough time in her bed to succeed in his royal duties. Dynasties died out for many reasons, and the ill health or infertility of the wife was only one of them. Lack of interest on the part of the husband would do just as well to wither a royal line.

But Rubens left all that unsaid. Like any vigorous and capable twenty-three-year-old prince, Don Fernando was also sensitive about his youth. He would not take kindly to the suggestion that he was not, actually, a wise old Nestor.

Chapter 34

By midnight, Elizabeth Lytle was anxious. Anthony and the others should have returned by now. Quite some time earlier, in fact. It didn’t take but twenty minutes to walk to the house where Juliet was staying. They’d been gone for over two hours.

She put on her outer wear, and opened the door. Then, hesitated. Walking the streets of Southwark in the middle of the night was not safe for a woman. Not for a man, either, come down to it, unless he was armed and capable with weapons.

Chapter 15

            “Dashing through the snow,

On a two goat open sleigh,

Over rocks and bumps we go,

            Shivering all the way.

Oh what fun it is to ride

On a two goat open sl—”

A particularly large bump knocked the breath out of Liz. Lamont didn’t know if he should be relieved or not. Liz was to singing what Pavarotti was to the construction industry.

PYRAMID POWER – snippet 14:

Jerry eyed the snake warily, but the huge serpent resting on the ledge above seemed semi-torpid. The creature seemed content with just dripping its venom onto the face of the bound god below. So he put the bag over Loki’s face and  backed off hastily.

Sigyn took her sheltering bowl away, and poured it out. And Loki lay… still. And then spoke from under the bag. “Sigi. Rest your arms for a while. I don’t like the view under here, but there is no pain. There is no pain,” he said again, almost incredulously.

Chapter 33

“There’s something very peculiar going on over there, I tell you.” Elizabeth Lytle finished pouring the broth and started passing out the cups to the three men sitting at her kitchen table.

“What? Followed her, did you?” asked Richard Towson, nodding his thanks.
